Perhaps you’ve heard that shampooing your hair less frequently is better for it. Or maybe you’re considering giving up shampoo and being a part of the “no poo” movement in order to have healthier, more attractive hair.
According to experts, there is no one best frequency for shampooing. It might not be necessary as frequently as you believe. In most cases, it comes down to taste. Look at your hair type and styling preferences for suggestions.
Alli Webb, a licenced hair stylist and the creator of Drybar, says she has always advocated for letting hair sit without shampooing for a few days. “I occasionally advise my clients to skip shampooing as long as possible for hair that is normal in terms of oiliness and medium weight.”
What is the purpose of this? Over-shampooing could result in less-than-luxurious hair.
“Shampoo is an emulsifier that collects and holds excess oil, grime, and product residue, which you then rinse out to clean the hair,” adds Lamb. Hair naturally produces an oil called sebum.
Generally speaking, some dirt is OK and natural; you definitely want some oils to stay in your hair.
According to Carolyn Goh, MD, assistant clinical professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, “They provide hydrating and a protective barrier for the skin and hair.”

Every other day, or every two to three days, without washing is typically acceptable for the ordinary individual. “There isn’t a general advice. It’s time to shampoo if the hair is clearly oily, the scalp itches, or the skin is flaking from grime, according to Goh.
